This yard is a model of water conservation. Hardy flowering natives and drought tolerant plants allow this landscape the luxury of having no irrigation system. A thick layer of mulch provides root protection and reduces evapotranspiration. A large, shallow depressed basin is installed in the front yard to retain water on site, allowing the plants access to a deep reserve of water supply during the long Southern California dry season. The depressed basin creates an attractive change of levels, transforming the formerly bare and at front yard into a secluded and protected space.
