In restoring this neglected mid-20th Century property, care was taken to retain and enhance the integrity of the Modernist architectural style.
Solution:
Previouly, the backyard had been completely paved over. We replaced this sea of concrete with three visually dynamic concrete circles which free up ample space for planting, and which function as footing for garden furniture and a large sculpture. A decayed 57' long bench was restored in the back patio, as it was too wonderful a 1950’s detail to lose.
Plants with architectural qualities have been chosen to accentuate the strong lines of the Modernist house. Colorful, curving planting beds contrast against clean looking no-maintenance Del Rio gravel areas and square concrete pads. Large pots showcasing dramatic plants are strategically placed through the pool area, which is the centrepiece of the house.
Large masses of drought resistant, native grasses have been installed on the back slope to flow in the wind, further accentuating the long, low lines of the house.
