A first time home buyer with limited time and financial resources wanted to experiment with low-maintenance, drought-resistant plants.

Solution:

A selection of hardy flowering natives and drought-resistant plants were installed. A large, shallow dry retaining basin was dug in the front yard to retain water on site, allowing the plants access to a deep reserve of water supply during the long Southern Californian dry season. No other irrigation system was installed. A thick layer of mulch was added to provide root protection and reduce evapotranspiration.

Besides facilitating water conservation, the retaining basin creates an attractive change of levels. We succeeded in transforming the client’s formerly bare and flat front yard into a secluded and protected space where he can rest and enjoy the company of friends. The new landscape is durable, drought-resistant, and low-maintenance—the perfect blend of practicality and elegance.
